The street Am Treff was created in the 1970s as part of urban planning in the GDR. It is located in the center of Halle-Neustadt, a district that was planned from 1964 onward as a socialist prefabricated housing city. Am Treff was intended as a socialist meeting place for residents—a space for social interaction featuring typical WBS 70 prefabricated buildings (WBS 70 buildings were common in the GDR because they could be produced cheaply from concrete), small shops, service providers, and playgrounds. One of these playgrounds is the “Drachennest” playground, which is especially popular today with families and children. Even today, the street reflects the transformation from the GDR era to the present: modernized, yet with history embedded in its concrete.
