Tilman Riemenschneider was born around 1460 and died in 1531 in Würzburg.
He was an important German sculptor of the Late Gothic period and the beginning of the Renaissance.
He became famous for his masterful works made of wood and stone, especially his altar pieces.
He spent most of his life in Würzburg, where he led a large workshop.
His art is characterized by strong expressiveness and delicate attention to detail.
Riemenschneider combined Gothic traditions with new artistic ideas of the Renaissance.
He had a great influence on the development of German sculpture.
His works are still regarded today as outstanding achievements in European art history.
